Course Goals
Three primary goals are to:

  • 1. Understand Key Business Concepts

  • 2. Apply mathematical concepts in a variety of areas (Personal Finance, Sales, Payroll, Home Ownership, Inventory Valuation, Investment & Statistics)

  • 3. Enhance students' analytical skills




    SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES FOR EACH GOAL:

    Goal #1: Understand Key Business Concepts

    Objective #1: Understand the significance and implications of the "Time Value of Money" concept in business

    Objective #2: Understand the purpose and use of trade discounts and the credit terms a business may offer.

    Objective #3: Understand the costs associated with installment buying

    Objective #4: Understand how to read, analyze and interpret the key financial statements.

    Objective #5: Compare and contrast 3 major types of investments: stocks, bonds and mutual funds.

    Objective #6: Understand the importance of business statistics in predicting future sales.



    Goal #2: Apply Concepts in a Variety of Areas

    Objective #1: Research, plan and prepare a budget for a vacation.

    Objective #2: Calculate markups and markdowns based on cost and selling price and price perishable items to cover spoilage loss.

    Objective #3: Calculate various types of employee gross pay and compute the applicable payroll deductions.

    Objective #4: Prepare a detailed amortization schedule

    Objective #5: Identify and complete the 4-step process for discounting an interest bearing note before maturity

    Objective #6: Calculate and explain the key financial ratios and complete a trend analysis

    Objective #7: Use various techniques to analyze and graphically represent business statistics




    Goal #3: Enhance students' analytical skills

    Objective #1: Identify and translate a variety of business problems into mathematical representations

    Objective #2: Compute the solutions to these problems and determine which options are most feasible given the circumstances

    Objective #3: Understand and apply the 5-step approach to solving for unknown in word problems

    Objective #4: Determine the cost of home ownership (mortgage, insurance, taxes, etc.)

    Objective #5: Evaluate the performance of each type of investment (stocks, bonds and mutual funds) by calculating and interpreting the earnings per share, PE ratio, rate of return, yield and net asset value (where appropriate)

    How To Proceed:

  • The 13 modules ("Preparing for Success" module and 12 Lesson Modules) are located in the "Course Content" area. (Select "Course Content" from the menu bar on the right or from the bottom of this page.)

  • Within each module, there are a sequence of activities.

  • The best way to achieve mastery of the material is to complete each of the activities listed in the order presented.

  • You are to begin with the "Orientation" module. On completion, start with lesson one and proceed sequentially to lesson twelve.

  • Note: A "Lesson" is not the same as a "chapter". For example, lesson one covers material in chapters one and two.
